I Heart Snow (Pro Update 2-14)

Posted by Josh on February 14, 2007

What better Valentine’s Day gift than an ice storm cancelling classes so I can stay home and blog, but the weather then getting above freezing so I can easily clean off my car?

NBA

Carmelo was named Western Conference Player of the Week for last week (Feb 4-10). Among his accomplishments, which I failed to mention in my last Update, was a triple-double (31, 10, 10) vs. Phoenix on Feb 5. He was also chosen for the All-Star Team as an injury replacement on Friday. Since that day, the Nuggets have won three in a row. Melo had 34, 6, & 5 vs. Indiana Friday, 29, 8, & 10 vs. Milwaukee Saturday, and 28, 8, & 5 vs. the Warriors on Monday. This marks 5 straight games in which he has had 5 or more assists, starting with that triple-double. Two different articles are suggesting that the All-Star selection has taken some emotional pressure off Anthony, and attributed the Nuggets’ win streak to this new atmosphere. Me, I think it has more to do with Marcus Camby being healthy. But if it helps ‘Melo to relax, it can only be a good thing for the Nuggets. They face Minnesota tonight in their last contest before the All-Star Break.

Last night, Hakim Warrick helped lead the Grizzlies to victory.

He had 15 points and 12 rebounds, scoring six straight (on a pair of free throws and two dunks) late in the 4th quarter as Memphis held off the Hornets. This is his third straight game in double-digit scoring, after a string of three games scoring 0, 4, and 5. He had 14 on Saturday night, also vs. the Hornets, and 12 on Friday night vs. Minnesota. His minutes also jumped from 10 per game in that bad stretch to 25 per game in these three. He was not invited to All-Star Weekend, snubbed for the Sophomore-Rookie game in favor of David Lee of the Knicks (who admittedly has better rebounding numbers, but is not exactly a highlight film waiting to happen).

D-League

Both Gerry and Damone Brown’s teams won their games last night. The bad news for G-Mac fans is that he only played 18 minutes, though he still found time to score 7 and dish 6 assists. One reason for this drop in PT is that the Jam recently signed Mateen Cleaves (formerly of Michigan State and most recently seen playing for the Kazan Unics in Russia), who has NBA experience, to split time at the PG position. This is not encouraging to say the least. Meanwhile, Damone Brown had 11 & 3 in the win, following his 15 & 4 from Saturday’s win. These teams must have seen me mock their losing ways in my last Update. You’re welcome for the motivation, fellas.

Japan

Ryan Blackwell has 23 & 8 Saturday, and 20 & 12 Sunday as the 89ers split a pair with the Grouses. (Honest.)

Europe

The Italian League had something called the TIM cup this past weekend. (Tim did you have anything to do with this??) Looks like some kind of mid-season mini-tournament involving the top 8 teams. TIM is an Italian cellphone company so it was probably completely promotional. I mean, there are 16 more games left in the regular season, and then the playoffs. But whatever it was, Preston Shumpert’s team won 3 games in 4 days to take the TIM Cup. Preston did not have a great series, averaging under 5 ppg. But they won. Euroleague playoffs have begun; Benetton plays tomorrow.

There was a similar event to the TIM Cup in the Polish League: the Puchar Polski (Polish Cup). The regular season takes a break for one week and the top teams play a mini-tournament. And, Otis Hill’s Anwil was victorious in this tournament. Otis was quiet in the first two games — but erupted for 18 points to lead his team to victory in the final game.

Elvir had 13 & 7 in a win Saturday in normal Belgian League action.

ABA

Z Sims had a franchise-record-obliterating 21 assists as Rochester crushed Hollywood (which should be the natural order of all things if you ask me) on Saturday. The link above is an actual Game Story, if you can believe it. Meanwhile, Duany’s Buffalo squad braved the elements to go 2-0 on a Canadian road trip over the weekend, defeating Quebec City and Montreal. No word on Kueth’s contributions, but he seems happy:
