Gerry Blows Up (Pro Update 2-1)

Posted by Josh on February 1, 2007

Gerry McNamara came to play to-NIGHT! 35 points, 6 assists, 10-21 shooting (3-4 on threes). Of course, his team lost. They always lose. But nobody here really cares about that (though I bet Gerry does). Here is a game story from the Bakersfield paper. Also, in case you missed it in the earlier post, Gerry’s team will be on NBATV tape delay tonight (Thursday night Feb 1) at 10:30 PM. This is a game from last weekend in which Gerry led his team with 19 points. Check it out if you have the appropriate satellite service. Meanwhile, Damone Brown’s D-League team has not played since the last update, but has 2 games this weekend.

NBA

In the regular NBA, things are improving for Hakim Warrick. He had 15 points last night, 2nd most on the team, in 30 minutes of action. Last Saturday he had 20 points and 6 rebounds in 27 minutes, and Monday 9 points and 6 rebounds in 25 minutes. He hadn’t played more than 22 minutes since Dec 26, and most games he was getting between 10 and 15 minutes. Then he had that one spot-start last week when Gasol was out, scored 27, and suddenly he is back to a major supporting role. That’s some dynamic coaching right there. The Gasol trade rumors continue to swirl; the deadline is in a few weeks so Hak could be back to starting by the end of the month.

Things are not so rosy in Denver. The Nuggets lost last night to the lowly (sorry, Dan) Trailblazers. This is their fourth straight loss, after winning their first two in the Melo-AI Era. (Although Iverson missed this game.) Carmelo has been scoring a lot of points (37, 23, 25, and 33 in the four games) but his shooting percentage in the four games is only 44%, whereas he had been above 50% for the first half of the season. He’s rebounding around 6 per game since he got back, and not turning the ball over too much, but something has gone bad quickly in Colorado and they don’t have much more room for error in the superior Western Conference.

Speaking of the superior West, Etan Thomas’ Washington Wizards have the best record in the Eastern Conference, even with their loss last night to the also-lowly Raptors. Etan had 4 points and 6 rebounds in this game in 16 minutes; last game he played 22 minutes (his most in a while) and had 9 points and 3 rebounds. I’ve had a chance to see snippets of his play here in DC, and he doesn’t seem as aggressive as he was early in the season when he was starting. He also misses too many short jump hooks, shots he customarily makes, at least in the past. That was his one reliable offensive move. Alas.

Jason Hart’s DNP streak has reached 14 games. There are rumors, though that the Kings are willing to trade anyone on their roster, even Mike Bibby — which strikes me as a terrible idea, but if they do go that route, maybe Jason will get some PT down the road as Sacramento jostles for position in the Greg Oden Sweepstakes.

JAPAN

Ryan Blackwell was left off the All-Star team in favor of his teammate Mamadou Diouf, who to be fair is also having a good season. Not as good as Blackwell’s (16.1 ppg to 20.0 for Ryan; 10.9 rpg to 10.1 for Ryan) but still good. It’s unclear what the criteria were for inclusion on the roster; I assume some fan voting was involved, but how much only those who can read Japanese know.

EUROPE

I realized it’s been a while since the last European update. Preston Shumpert had an excellent game with 19 points and 12 boards on Jan 21 in a win, then posted 9 points and 2 boards this past Sunday in another win. His team (Benetton) currently sits 4th in the Italian League standings at the exact halfway point of the season. Also, Benetton has qualified for the “Final 16” in the Euroleague, and Shumpert is eligible to participate in the playoff games even though he was ineligible for the remainder of the regular season due to his switching teams. By the way, his former team Climamio Bologna is 10th in the Italian League standings and missed the Euroleague playoffs. Suckers.

Elvir Ovcina had 13 & 6 in a loss on Jan 20, and 7 & 7 in another loss this past Saturday. Both games are Belgian League action, as his team did not make the ULEB playoffs. In Polish League play, Otis Hill led his team with both 19 points and 7 rebounds in a one-point loss on Jan 21, then had a rough game last weekend, scoring only 5 points on 1-10 shooting, but his teammates picked him up and they won the game.

ABA

I had grand plans to attend an ABA game this coming weekend, as Z Sims’ Razorsharks were scheduled to come to Maryland on Friday. But that game got cancelled, even though both teams involved still exist. (Most ABA cancellations happen when one team folds midway through the season.) So I’ll have to make do with the spotty online coverage I’ve grown to… tolerate, I suppose.

The Razorsharks won their most recent game, Thursday vs. Strong Island. (No games since then, for them or for Duany’s Buffalo squad, due to the ABA All-Star break.) Sims had 11 points and 11 assists. And looks like he is about to fling a one-handed alley-oop pass over this guy’s unsuspecting dome:

  4. I’ve got an Amazon gift certificate burning holes in my pocket,
and I want to get the most bang for my buck.

Enter the Secret Amazon Web Pages:

    http://tinyurl.com/38sojf

This is where you’re going to find the “latest sales, rebates, and limited-time offers” from
Amazon, and you can score some pretty deep discounts if you’re a savvy shopper.

Next, there’s the special Sale link. This is open every Friday, and ONLY on Fridays.

You can find the same good discounts here as you would in hidden Deals, although some
Fridays you can really get lucky and make off like an Amazon bandit – I’ve seen discounts
there as low as 75% off sticker price.
