Throwing hands

Posted by Tim on December 18, 2006

Carmelo just got a 15-game suspension for cold cocking Mardy Collins in the weekend’s Knicks-Nuggets brawl. Here’s the video, just in case you’ve been living in a hole for the past few days:

UPDATE: I’m thinking of the first meaning of cold cock at the link above; I’m not sure if “the act of destroying someones [sic] mental psychee [sic] by intentionally disregarding a joke/statement/funny comment; this involves ridiculing and shaming, as well as a potential loss of friendship” is a suspendable offense in the NBA, but it’s certainly not how Melo put Mardy on the floor, at least not according to the video.

In Melo’s defense, at least we know homeboy can still keep it real. It would suck if he couldn’t throw a punch and was “still just a thug from West Baltimore”… but, oh, wait… please pay close attention to 1:00 into the YouTube video above – was that an open hand slap I saw?

How come no one’s giving Melo any credit for landing the punch? Everytime I see a brawl in baseball or basketball there’s always haymakers being thrown every which way that miss horribly. Batters and pitchers swinging at each other are the worst – they look like the drunk guys outside Hogs and Heifers. But not Carmelo baby, he knows how to smack a ho.

I bet as a rookie he would have rushed the punch and missed horribly, completely ignoring the flow of the brawl. But now he knows how to use teammates, wait till the right moment, and strike with confidence. He’s making huge progress.

Melo also knows how to run away quickly after smacking a dude.

By the way, didn’t Mardy Collins play for John “Send in the Goon” Chaney at Temple?
